Here’s a fact that surprises almost every pet owner the first time they see it: the exact same veterinary medicine, same brand, same strength, same box, can cost £34 at one seller and £19 at another: pet medicine prices vary that much. Nothing about the product differs. Only the price does.
Once you know why, the new rules about written prescriptions make a lot more sense, and so does the money you can save.
Where the price gap comes from
Overheads. A veterinary practice is an expensive thing to run: clinical staff, equipment, premises, out-of-hours provision. Medicines sold at the counter have historically helped carry those costs. An online pharmacy runs a warehouse. The box is the same; the building behind it isn’t.
Buying power. Large online retailers buy stock in volumes an individual practice can’t match, and some of that discount reaches the shelf price.
History. For decades, most owners simply never saw a second price. When nobody compares, prices drift. The Competition and Markets Authority found exactly this in its investigation of the UK veterinary market, which is why transparency, itemised bills, written prescriptions and capped prescription fees sit at the heart of the reforms rolling out from autumn 2026.
None of this makes your vet the villain. It makes the market one where, until now, the information was all on one side. That’s what’s changing.
What the price gap is worth to you
For a one-off antibiotic course, honestly, not much: convenience wins, buy it at the practice and go home. The real money is in the medicines your pet takes every month or every day, for years:
- Flea, tick and worming treatments, bought twelve times a year
- Arthritis and pain medicines for older dogs and cats
- Heart medications, often multiple tablets a day for life
- Thyroid, skin and allergy treatments
On a large dog taking a daily heart medicine plus monthly parasite protection, the difference between counter prices and fair online prices can comfortably exceed £300 a year. Same medicines, same brands, same dog.
How to compare properly
Three rules keep it honest and safe:
Match the pack exactly. A flea chew for a 20 to 40kg dog is a different product from the 10 to 20kg one. Compare like with like: same brand, same weight band, same count.
Registered retailers only. Buy from registered UK retailers of veterinary medicines. If a site will sell you a prescription-only medicine without asking for a prescription, leave immediately.
Count the delivery. A £2 saving that costs £4.99 in postage isn’t a saving. For repeat medicines, ordering a couple of months together usually solves this.
